Dave Sprenkle and Alex Bemben Both Repeat as Champs at TC Challenge #3
Local FM Dave Sprenkle scored a perfect 3-0 to win first place in the Open section at the TC Challenge #3 held on January 31, 2015 at the Grand Traverse Mall. With this victory, Dave becomes our first repeat champion in the Open section.
Meanwhile in the Reserve Section, the “Prodigy of Petoskey” Alex Bemben also scored a perfect 3-0 to win first place, extending his winning streak to 10 straight games in Traverse City tournaments. For Alex this is a three-peat. And at this rate it won’t be long before Alex “graduates” to the Open section!

In my game with Dennis Bailey there are a lot of improvements for both sides, but the ones you mention are certainly worth noting. In fact, I was dreading 27.Rfxf5 because I knew I’d have to take a perpetual with my king so exposed. Right after 27.Rc3 I could have secured my advantage with 27…Qf7! And on it goes.
Given how well my first round opponents have played in all 3 events, I’m going to have to insist I get to drink the same coffee they’ve all been drinking!
